Under 13’s Girls Football

The year 7 girls played in their first football fixture on Monday 12th October against an experienced Plymstock School side. The girls had not played together as a team before but came into the match with an enthusiastic approach.

Plymstock made a strong start, dominating the game with their county striker scoring a number of times with Tavistock responding by tightening up their defensive play. Changes in positions were made at half time; the score standing at 9-nil to Plymstock. With 3 alterations in the Tavistock team, the girls kept their resolve and put the Plymstock team under a great amount of pressure, getting 2 goals back. The final score was Plymstock School 16-2 Tavistock College.

Well done to all of the girls who took part.

Netball and Football News

On Tuesday 29th September Tavistock College took a netball team and a five aside football team to Asbury Golf Hotel Okehampton for a Cooperative Schools event. The pupils were extremely lucky to get the opportunity to perform on brand new astro and indoor netball courts.

Year 8 Atheletics Report

Y8 athletes took part in Plymouth and West Devon championships at Brickfields on Tuesday 16t June.

A team of 7 made up from 5 girls and 2 boys from Year 8. Girls were Leah Parnell-Moses (100m & High Jump/relay) Emily Frost (200m/relay) Mia Cole (200m/relay) Izzy Hiller (long jump) Sophie Isaacs (Shot)

Boys Gabriel Schraibman (100m hurdles/200m) Ben Edmunds (1500m/long jump)

A winning start with Gabriel Schraibman running to 1st place in an excellent 100m hurdles field. Next the 100m girls sprint saw another Tavistock 1st place with and excellent run from Leah Parnell-Moses who out in a PB and fastest overall time over 2 heats.

Mia Cole ran a very good race in the 800M coming 3rd in a very strong field which included county runners.

Emily Frost ran home 1st in the girls 200m, putting in a great performance.

Ben Edmunds ran an excellent 1500m to come home in 4th place and was also placed in the long jump event, competing very well.
An injury to Schraibman (hip) during the 200m was enough to rule out further success, but to his testament he carried on, finishing the race showing real determination.

Isabel Hillier took 3rd place in the girls long jump and Leah Parnell-Moses came in1st place in the girls high jump with another PB, beating a strong field.

The big finish didn’t disappoint with Tavistock again taking 1st place honours in an excellent 4x100m relay. The team of Frost, Parnell-Moses, Cole and Hillier took a very deserved 1st place and finished the event with the fastest relay time overall.
An excellent and talented Athletics team who represented the college in style.

Year 8 Girls Cricket

The year 8 Girls’ Cricket team played fantastically well on Wednesday 17th June came runners up in Devon in the county finals in Torquay.

Playing against Torquay Academy and South Dartmoor College, Tavistock were both strong with the bat and decisive in the field.

Izzy Hillier and Darcey Brown were our highest run scores and our main wicket takers were Leah Parnell-Moses and Captain Mione Shaw.

Tavistock won their opening game in the tri-series beating Torquay by 4 runs and with Torquay losing their other game to South Dartmoor, it left a showdown in the final game.

Tavistock set a target 59 off their 60 balls and took early wickets. However, with a good batting performance South Dartmoor surpassed the target making a further 26 runs.

Well done to all of the students involved:

Mione Shaw, Darcey Brown, Sophie Isaac, Katie Gray, Katelyn Lees, Mia Cole, Izzy Hillier, Charlotte Able, Catlin Bond, Niamh Matthews, Leah Parnell-Moses.

Year 10 Rounders

We had a great turn out from the GCSE and other members of year 10 for a rounders fixture against Launceston. The boys played first and had a great game with some excellent batting and fielding skills which resulted with the boys gaining a win.

The girls then had a great game where they kept a close scoreline until the last 8 balls when the Launceston boys got several of our players out. The final result was a lose but it was a great close game.

The final game was a mixed team which was very exciting it went down to the last ball when Ryan Brimacombe had to get a rounder to win the game, so no pressure at all!!! Ryan played a great game and secured a rounder which meant we won the game.

The year 10s played with great sporting etiquette and where a credit to the College.

Well done

Some great praise of our swimming young leaders

Dear Mr Forster,

I am pleased to write to you again at this time of year on behalf of Tavistock Swimming Club.

As you know on the 23rd April our club hosted the Tavistock Area Primary Inter-Schools Swimming Gala welcoming twelve teams from ten schools to Meadowlands. This event is organised annually by club Vice President Sheila Radgick, with the help of volunteer officials, comprising committee members, qualified parents and senior swimmers.

The pool hire and staffing costs, including lifeguard cover, continue to be sponsored by the management team at Meadowlands currently 1 Life. We have always appreciated this helpful gesture.
As most adult committee members are working, the galas could not take place without the assistance of our senior swimmers who volunteer their time, helping variously as marshals, time keepers and runners.

We value their assistance and are grateful to Tavistock College staff for authorising their release from school.

This year the young people from Tavistock College were

Year 10
Gemma Arundel, Jessamy Clemens, Jake France, Laura Meredith
Year 9
Sam Bates, Morgan Turnock
Year 8
Thanae Garland Tsirka, Ryan Lillyman

As in previous years they all worked hard in a professional, cheerful and enthusiastic manner, supporting the main adult officials in ensuring that the gala flowed smoothly and the primary school children enjoyed the experience. For some it would have been their first competitive swimming event. A friendly face, closer to their own age can be very reassuring.

It is very commendable that these young people from Tavistock College are willing to give something back to their sport, offering their services to give others the opportunity to achieve pride in representing their schools, while also experiencing competitive swimming.

I hope you will be able to arrange for this commendation to be recognised via their tutors and subsequently added to their records of achievement. Tavistock College can be proud of their exemplary behaviour. Yet again these students are a credit to their school and their families.

Thank you,

Sue Dunstan
