Tavistock College - Together: we care, we challenge, we excel

Tavistock College Election Day

Posted: 29 April 2015

Tavistock College are running our own Election Day on 7th May. Year 12 students from the College are representing each of the main parties (plus our own ‘Devon Independence Party’, which incorporates the idea and manifestos of the SNP and Plaid Cymru).

Students across the college have been getting politically mobilised and into the election spirit. This week the candidates have each been pitching their (much abbreviated!) manifestos to each of the year group assemblies. We are looking forward to an exciting and no-doubt tense vote on May 7th!

Year 8, 9 and 10 rounders

Posted: 29 April 2015

The rounders season has began with the first fixture of the East Cornwall League being hosted in Liskeard.

Congratulations to the girls who played rounders tonight, especially the four Year 8 players who played with the Year 9 girls.

Year 9 Team
The year 9 team were two players down and as four of the team were in year 8, they were up against it before they got on the rounders pitch. The new team gave it everything they had in the first game, losing 5 – 7 against Callington. They then found their feet and had a great game against Liskeard winning 7 – 5 1/2.

Year 10 Team
The year 10 team had two great games which they won with confidence. Their fielding and batting skills were excellent. The girls won both their games, Liskeard 3 -5 and Callington 10 – 3. Well done and we look forward to more successes this season.

Nepal Earthquake

Posted: 28 April 2015

Dear Parents, carers and students
As you are aware Tavistock College has established a partnership with a high school in Kathmandu, Nepal. We were thrilled to welcome the Principal and Head of English to the College earlier this term and have been shocked and saddened to read of the tragedy unfolding in Nepal, following the devastating earthquake this weekend. We are pleased to tell you that the colleagues we met are safe and that Mrs Marcer (formerly Mrs Mitchell), the former head of Lamerton primary school, who is volunteering in the country at the moment, is also safe. They are, however, all coping with extreme difficulty and shock.

Many students met our Nepalese colleagues and we have a Nepal Club which meets fortnightly to plan further important interaction. We therefore feel it important to not only reassure our students about the safety of the individuals they met, but come together to support the country in some way. On Friday May 1st we will hold a mufti day in College and also a cake sale. If a student wishes to participate we are asking for a voluntary contribution of £1.00 to wear mufti. Any donations of cakes can be left in any of the HOY offices on Thursday or Friday morning. Any parent who wishes to donate should send their donation into College with their child and it will be collected on Friday morning. As Shelter Box is a local charity – with whom we have strong links and who are already in Kathmandu providing shelter, warmth and water – all money collected will be given to Shelter Box for Nepal.

We will have a shelter box tent displayed in the refectory so students can see the contents of a Shelter Box and know exactly where their donations are going. We will display the stove, blankets, water purifier and all the contents which, along with a tent, provide the means for a family to survive in the immediate aftermath of a disaster.
