World Book Day 2026
We are delighted to share our plans for World Book Day 2026, which takes place on Thursday 5th March. At Tavistock College, we are committed to nurturing a love of reading, and this year’s celebrations aim to inspire students across the school through a range of engaging and inclusive activities.
We have organised several events throughout the day, and we hope your son/daughter will enjoy taking part:
- Tutor Quiz Competition
During tutor time, students will take part in a book‑themed quiz featuring activities such as matching staff members with their favourite books. The winning tutor group in each year will receive a ‘library leisure’ session, where they can relax with a book of their choice and share a box of chocolates. - Whole‑School Illustration Competitions
Students are invited to enter two creative competitions (all resources to be collected from Mrs Caves in E5) - Design a new whole‑school reading ruler bookmark to be used during in‑class reading.
- Young Illustrators Competition, where students create illustrations to accompany a chosen book.
Full details will be shared in tutor time and winners will receive book vouchers for The Book Stop in Tavistock. - Reading in Lessons
For the first ten minutes of every lesson on World Book Day, students will spend time reading a pre‑selected short story. Our aim is for each class to finish the full story by the end of the school day. - Book‑Themed Fancy Dress Competition
Staff and students are warmly encouraged to dress up as their favourite book characters. To ensure expectations are clear, students must have their costume approved in advance by Mrs Green or Mrs Caves.
Please note that any student arriving in non‑uniform without prior approval will unfortunately need to be removed from lessons.
We are very much looking forward to celebrating World Book Day at Tavistock College and to engaging students in these exciting reading activities. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs Alice Green, Academic Director for English and Literacy, via email agreen@dmatschools.org.uk
Thank you for your anticipated support with the event.
