Dockyards trip March 2026
The Dockyards Visit 2026 was an inspiring and hands‑on experience for the eleven students from Years 10 to 13 who travelled to the Devonport Naval Base to spend the day with 47 Commando. From the moment we arrived, the Royal Navy team made the group feel welcome and engaged, offering insightful introductions to their work and the vital role they play. Students were able to see a range of small naval vessels up close and had the unique opportunity to board and explore various landing craft and RIBs, gaining an authentic sense of their operational purpose and how they are used in real maritime scenarios.
A particular highlight of the morning was the guided tour of HMS Blazer, where students learned about the responsibilities of a patrol vessel and the routines of its crew. The chance to move through the ship, ask questions, and hear personal stories brought military life into sharp focus and created a deeper appreciation for the dedication and professionalism of Navy personnel. Following this, everyone enjoyed a relaxed and sociable lunch at the NAAFI, giving students additional time to reflect on the morning’s activities in a true naval setting.
The afternoon continued with an exciting tour of HMS Portland, an active Royal Navy frigate. This experience was especially engaging, as students were eager to question the crew about their roles, the ship’s capabilities, and what it is like to serve at sea. The crew’s openness and enthusiasm made the visit both educational and unforgettable, leaving our group with a much richer understanding of naval operations, engineering, and career pathways. We extend our sincere thanks to the Royal Navy and 47 CDO for their exceptional hospitality, professionalism, and willingness to inspire the next generation through this outstanding visit.
