Robotics workshop

Tavistock College was thrilled to recently welcome Hyette Education, supported by the Royal Air Force, to deliver an exciting robotics workshop for our Year 8 students. Over 100 students took part in this hands-on session, which combined creativity, coding, and engineering to bring robots to life.

The workshop introduced students to the world of robotics through LEGO-based STEMbotics challenges, encouraging them to design, build, and programme robots to complete a series of age-appropriate tasks. Using bespoke challenge mats, students worked with motors, sensors, and mechanisms to solve problems, reinforcing key principles from the Computing, Design Technology, and Science curricula.

Coding was a central part of the experience, with students programming their robots using an interface similar to Scratch, building on prior learning and exploring core coding concepts such as sequencing, selection, and iteration.

The workshop was not only educational but also highly engaging, promoting teamwork, problem-solving, and resilience. There was a real sense of achievement as students overcame tricky challenges and saw their robots succeed.

This exciting opportunity comes at a time when Tavistock College is celebrating excellent recent Science results, and reflects our commitment to inspiring students to pursue STEM subjects in the future. Activities like these help spark curiosity and show the real-world applications of science and technology.

Principal James Buchanan commented:
"We are delighted to offer our students such innovative learning experiences. Robotics workshops like this not only develop technical skills but also encourage creativity and collaboration – essential skills for the future."
