Seth Lakeman: Creative workshop at the College

🎶 An inspiring day of music, creativity and songwriting with Seth Lakeman!

 

We were delighted to welcome acclaimed local musician Seth Lakeman to work with our students, delivering a series of performances and workshops that gave them a fantastic insight into the creative process of a professional musician.

Seth performed to our entire Year 7 cohort, sharing songs inspired by the Devon landscape and the myths and legends of Dartmoor. These included Huntsman and the Moon, which students had previously studied in class as part of their Dartmoor Myths and Legends unit, alongside Kitty Jay, The White Hare and The Black Fox.

Between performances, Seth spoke about the folklore behind his songs, his inspirations and how he transforms stories and ideas into music and lyrics.

Students in Years 8, 9 and 10 also had the opportunity to meet Seth and discuss songwriting, poetry and lyricism, gaining valuable insights and inspiration to support their own creative writing.

Our sixth-form Music and Creative Arts students took part in a hands-on composition workshop, while Year 11 students worked in smaller groups to develop their skills in preparation for their composition unit. Working collaboratively, students wrote an original song in just one hour before developing and recording their work.

Perhaps the most valuable lesson was Seth’s advice to simply get started, not overthink things and have a go. As one student reflected: “Songwriting is hard, but not as hard as you think once you have started.”
