Work Experience: success stories
Following a conversation earlier this week regarding how well three Tavistock College students have performed during their work experience placement at TASS, I wanted to share some feedback on their achievements.
I would like to say that all three students have conducted themselves impeccably throughout the week. They have been extremely polite to everyone they have met and have worked hard in every task they have undertaken.
During their placement, the students spent time supporting a range of community groups, including activities for older adults and individuals with a variety of disabilities, health conditions and learning needs. They helped prepare for community sessions and have willingly completed all tasks asked of them, including food preparation, cooking for a luncheon club and baking for a volunteer recruitment event.
The students also supported staff with a variety of administrative tasks, including filing, photocopying and laminating. They gained experience in reception duties, welcoming visitors and assisting with the production of a charity newsletter. In addition, they supported staff and volunteers during a community café volunteer recruitment event, where they interacted confidently with visitors, served refreshments, organised promotional materials and helped with setting up and packing away.
Throughout the week, they worked alongside other young volunteers and students from local educational settings. It was particularly pleasing to see how friendly, respectful and supportive they were towards one another and everyone they encountered.
To conclude the placement, each student took part in individual mobility scooter training, learning how to navigate doorways, lifts, ramps, tight corners and reversing manoeuvres safely.
All three students were awarded a Certificate of Achievement in recognition of their contributions. We would be delighted to welcome them back should they wish to undertake further volunteering opportunities in the future. They have been a real credit to Tavistock College, and we have thoroughly enjoyed having them with us.
SOUTH WEST WATER: “Spencer was really engaged and personable throughout his work experience week. He was involved in a wide range of activities from proactive office work, site visits, chemical dosing checks, and field laboratory work including analysis and microscopy. He brought a lot of background knowledge and understanding which allowed us to show him a wider variety of the role than expected without him being overwhelmed. He was a great representation of his school, with excellent communication skills and a can-do attitude getting involved wherever he could. We appreciate the fact he showed such an interest to understand the finer detail of how such critical infrastructure works. We wish him the best of luck for his GCSEs and career going forward, I’m sure he will be an asset to whatever he goes forward to do.”

NETWORK RAIL: Luke is a very well-spoken, polite, and genuine young man who demonstrates a level of maturity well beyond his years. He has approached the week with enthusiasm, professionalism, and a positive attitude, making a very favourable impression on everyone he has worked with.
Finding individuals who we believe would be a strong fit for our team is not always easy. However, based on the qualities Luke has demonstrated throughout the week, we would have no hesitation in welcoming him into our S&T section and supporting his development as he progresses. He has participated fully during his placement, and I sincerely hope he has enjoyed his time with us as much as we have enjoyed having him here.
