Revision and home learning
Our Approach to Homework
Homework is an important part of learning at Tavistock College. It helps students to:
- Develop independent study and time management skills
- Consolidate and extend learning from lessons
- Build good habits to support success at GCSEs, A Levels, and beyond
We aim to set homework in a way that is manageable, purposeful and supportive of family life and extracurricular commitments. All homework is set via our College online platform so that students and parents/carers can see what has been set and when it is due. Homework clubs run twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays), usually in the library, with ICT access and staff support available.
Homework at Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9)
All KS3 homework is set by 8am on Monday mornings. This allows students to plan their week and take responsibility for when they complete tasks. Please rest assured there is no expectation that all homework is completed on the same day, and we still hope that students stagger completion of their homework throughout the week and balance it with their other commitments. We gradually increase homework throughout Key Stage 3, so that students are supported to be ready for the level of independent learning that will be required at Key Stage 4.

Homework at Key Stage 4 (Years 10–11)
At KS4, homework is set for all subjects in line with a static timetable. This ensures students can plan their workload and continue to build good study habits.
- Homework is set on a fixed day for each subject and published on (Arbor?).
- Students usually have one week to complete tasks.
- In Year 11, extra homework or revision tasks may be set in preparation for GCSE exams.
Homework at Key Stage 5 (Years 12–13)
Independent study is a key part of post-16 learning.
- Students should expect to complete around 1 hour of independent work for every timetabled lesson.
- This may include tasks set by teachers, wider reading, research, revision, and preparation for assessments.
- Students are encouraged to create a personal study plan balancing lesson time, independent study, and wider commitments.
- Students have timetabled independent study time in the Sixth Form Quad.
Support and Expectations
To help every student succeed:
- Students should complete homework to the best of their ability, manage their time, and ask for help if needed.
- Teachers set homework clearly via (Arbor?), give guidance, and check completion.
- Parents/Carers can support by checking (Arbor?), encouraging a routine, and providing a quiet space for work.
- The College runs homework clubs twice weekly, monitors completion, and contacts home if support is needed.
