Year 8, 9 and 10 rounders

The rounders season has began with the first fixture of the East Cornwall League being hosted in Liskeard.

Congratulations to the girls who played rounders tonight, especially the four Year 8 players who played with the Year 9 girls.

Year 9 Team
The year 9 team were two players down and as four of the team were in year 8, they were up against it before they got on the rounders pitch. The new team gave it everything they had in the first game, losing 5 – 7 against Callington. They then found their feet and had a great game against Liskeard winning 7 – 5 1/2.

Year 10 Team
The year 10 team had two great games which they won with confidence. Their fielding and batting skills were excellent. The girls won both their games, Liskeard 3 -5 and Callington 10 – 3. Well done and we look forward to more successes this season.

The road to Moldova

Tavistock College Year 11 student Tate Budge travelled to Paignton in the last weekend of February to compete in the UK ITF (Taekwondo) English championships, hoping to take a step closer to inclusion in the UK Squad travelling to Moldova this summer for the European Championships.

Tate did brilliantly and won gold in both under 16’s and under 18’s male second degree black belt patterns.

Due to the European competition rules, all entrants must compete in the age group that they will turn in the year of the competition. So despite only being 15, Tate has had to step up to the under 18s category as he turns 16 later this year. Becoming English under 18’s champion (along with British under 18s Champion back in October) makes him the top ranked competitor for under 18s second degree black belt patterns and closer to his goal of making the UK Squad once more this summer!

Tate will now travel to the UK ITF Finals night later this month where his place in the UK Squad will be decided.20150228_154119

Public Services Students visit the Fire Service

On Friday 27th February 2015 the Tavistock College PE Faculty took the Year 12 Public Service students to the Crownhill Fire Station where they were involved in a question and answer session followed by a tour of the station and the equipment. The 12 students involved were then kitted up ready for their next part of the trip, which involved moving to Camels Head Fire Station.

The group were split into small groups to embark on a team building/leadership task that took them right outside of their comfort zones! Before entering the blackout building the students were taught specific search techniques, safe ways to move around a dark building and the correct method to travel through a tunnel.

After the exercise the student received great feedback and advice from the fireman. The trip was a great success and put the students through their paces as well as giving them an insight into the Fire Service. The students were a credit to the College.

Tavistock Success at Devon Schools X Country

Congratulations to Jodie Stacey, Josh Blake and Will Dax who represented Tavistock College in the West Devon district in the Devon Schools X Country Champs at Stover School on Saturday 17th January. All three ran strongly and in highly competitive races.

Jodie came 11th out of a field of around 70.

Will and Josh ran fantastically and really showed their talent. Will came 6th and Josh came 8th which means that they are both through to the next round where they will represent Devon schools in the South West Championships.

Plymouth Raiders Trip

On Friday 28th November Mrs Doyle and Mrs Blackmore took 50 year 8 pupils to Plymouth to have a fun filled session with the Plymouth Raiders team. We arrived at Pavilions and didn’t waste any time as we were straight on court for a high quality training session with the Raiders’ coaches and players. Pretty quickly we were developing our basketball skills and and getting put through our paces physically.

After the training session we went to the media room where we awaited the Raiders team. The question and answer session went far too quickly as we still had lots of questions. However, the players needed to get back on court to prepare for their game. No time to stop as 54 pizzas, 54 cookies and ice cream and 54 cans had to be handed out and then eaten before the game!!!

Back on court side to watch the very exciting and close game against Manchester Giants. The Raiders mascot Foxy kept us entertained, as did the cheerleaders – at times the teachers thought they were at a party and not a basketball game; The atmosphere was amazing. Sadly, Raiders lost the game but this was soon forgotten when we were all back on court collecting selfies and autographs.

A great time with a really great group of students!

Chantel Whiting, age 12, started boxing at the age of 11 and hasn’t looked back since. She has recently been selected to compete in Guernsey and Portsmouth representing the Western Counties boxing team. Chantel trains 3 time a week at the Mayflower Amateur Boxing Club and competes most weekends. She has been recognised as an up and coming talented boxer and boxing for the Western Counties at such a young age so early in her career is very impressive. Few female boxers have achieved this honour at such a young age. We look forward to seeing what the future holds for Chantel!

Stephanie Hutchins, aged 15, has many talents when it comes to sport but she excels at cricket. Stephanie has recently secured a place on the Devon team; she has been for England trials and is now on the scouting watch out list and being monitored. She has been selected for the Devon Elite squad and won bowler of the year for the Devon U15s. Her team recently came 2nd in the UK Plympton 1st regional Cup and won the Plympton 2nd Cup. Stephanie certainly has a very exciting sporting career ahead of her and it is all down to her hard work and dedication to sport.
