Tavistock College celebrated harvest festival this week with a special Year 7 assembly, when produce grown by students at the college was presented, along with a magnificent harvest loaf. Rev Sue Tucker gave a short talk to the students about how the idea of harvest festival developed and how important the harvest is, to all people and especially to our local farmers after the difficult growing season of 2016. Then Tony Welsh, formerly Head of Tremayne House, described the work of the Tavistock Food Bank and thanked all those students, staff and parents who donated items for the bank – so much, his car was absolutely filled with goods to take to the food bank.

The fresh produce was raffled the same day at the college, with tickets sold by the Young Producers’ Co-operative in aid of their chosen charities of Farm Africa and Margaret Green Animal Rescue. The lucky winner, Mrs Greener, took home plenty of fresh vegetables, jam, bread and eggs for the weekend.

On a fresh October day, year 11 geographers went on their coastal studies fieldtrip to Dawlish Warren.

Focusing on the conflicts that can be identified between coastal management strategies, the day was varied with a guided tour as well as questionnaires, sketches and measurements.

Over 40 Students in year 10 and 11 at Tavistock College have completed the ‘Bronze Arts Award’. This qualification is in association with Trinity College London, The Arts Council England and funded by the National Lottery. This qualification allows students to explore the Creative Arts in a number of ways. Students had to choose and complete an arts challenge, review an arts event, research someone who is an inspiration to them and then finally teach someone a skill in any form of the Arts. Students did this alongside their Creative Arts lessons at the college but also completed the work in their own time, showing both personal motivation, passion and dedication. The outcomes were varied and exciting; including teaching dance, playing an instrument, visiting an art gallery and reviewing a film. This qualification is highly recognised within the arts and schools. Students will now have the opportunity to work on Silver Arts Award (a level 2 qualification) which they are already excited about.
