The road to Moldova

Posted: 4 March 2015

Tavistock College Year 11 student Tate Budge travelled to Paignton in the last weekend of February to compete in the UK ITF (Taekwondo) English championships, hoping to take a step closer to inclusion in the UK Squad travelling to Moldova this summer for the European Championships.

Tate did brilliantly and won gold in both under 16’s and under 18’s male second degree black belt patterns.

Due to the European competition rules, all entrants must compete in the age group that they will turn in the year of the competition. So despite only being 15, Tate has had to step up to the under 18s category as he turns 16 later this year. Becoming English under 18’s champion (along with British under 18s Champion back in October) makes him the top ranked competitor for under 18s second degree black belt patterns and closer to his goal of making the UK Squad once more this summer!

Tate will now travel to the UK ITF Finals night later this month where his place in the UK Squad will be decided.20150228_154119

Public Services Students visit the Fire Service

Posted: 2 March 2015

On Friday 27th February 2015 the Tavistock College PE Faculty took the Year 12 Public Service students to the Crownhill Fire Station where they were involved in a question and answer session followed by a tour of the station and the equipment. The 12 students involved were then kitted up ready for their next part of the trip, which involved moving to Camels Head Fire Station.

The group were split into small groups to embark on a team building/leadership task that took them right outside of their comfort zones! Before entering the blackout building the students were taught specific search techniques, safe ways to move around a dark building and the correct method to travel through a tunnel.

After the exercise the student received great feedback and advice from the fireman. The trip was a great success and put the students through their paces as well as giving them an insight into the Fire Service. The students were a credit to the College.

Business Studies & Geography Real World Learning Project

Posted: 10 February 2015

On a beautiful but chilly Friday some hardy Geography and Business A Level students visited Burrator Discovery Centre at the invitation of SW Lakes Trust to work on a project where they explored different ways to enhance the visitor experience to the off road tracks that encompass the Reservoir.

Working with Emily Cannon, Burrator Heritage Learning Officer for SW Lakes Trust and Ross Mitchell, SW Lakes Trust Volunteer, the students had a meeting to discuss initiatives before getting out into the ‘field’ and immersing themselves in the environment to work on their brief.

Emma Berryman, Business teacher said, “This an amazing opportunity for the students to experience real world learning and to enhance their quality business and geography knowledge. We are looking forward to working on this exciting project with some fantastic students.”

“The students now have to work on realistic and sustainable trails and activities, targeted specifically at families with primary aged children, where they have to market and implement the project ideas, including working closely with SW Lakes Trust, a registered charity,” said Tori Froud, Geography Teacher.
